What's in your placenta?

If you want to understand the benefits of placenta pills, you have to to look at what’s actually in the placenta. The placenta is chock full of tons of good stuff! There are vitamins, minerals, and hormones. Your body can potentially use these postpartum. These compounds help with faster healing and improved mood. They can ease your transition to parenthood. Honestly, no one (without some serious equipment and training) can tell you precisely what’s in your individual placenta. However, all the following are there to some extent in healthy placentas.

The hypothalamus usually releases this hormone. But the placenta produces huge amounts of CRH during the third trimester of pregnancy, so the hypothalamus slacks off. After the placenta is gone, CRH levels drop like crazy, very quickly! It may take a while for the hypothalamus to get the message to start producing CRH at a helpful level. Research links low levels of CRH to depression in postpartum people.

An immune booster that can help prevent postpartum infections such as mastitis.

The protein molecule in red blood cells. This molecule carries oxygen from the lungs to the body’s tissues. It then returns carbon dioxide from the tissues back to the lungs. Low hemoglobin levels mean anemia. Anemia leads to fatigue and a host of other problems.

An interferon is a protein produced by the body’s immune system when there is an infection.

A mineral needed for hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. Iron is also needed for energy, good muscle and organ function. An average-sized placenta has anywhere from 34 to 170 mg of iron.

The “love hormone” starts and maintains labor contractions. Additionally, it helps the uterus clamp down after birth, thus minimizing postpartum bleeding. When the uterus shrinks faster, those crummy afterpains go away faster!

POEF seems to be involved in raising the pain threshold. POEF builds during late pregnancy. It peaks at or right before birth. After birth, it drops during the first 9-12 hours postpartum. The vast majority of mammals eat their placenta immediately postpartum. As a result, we can extrapolate from the existing research that eating the POEF in the placenta and amniotic sac can help with afterpains. Let me be clear: there are no opioids in your placenta. POEF enhances naturally occurring opioids. These opioids are part of the whole pregnancy/labor/birth hormonal dance.

Produced by the pituitary gland, this hormone starts lactation. It also plays an important role in reproductive health. Researchers think its presence in the placenta stimulates milk supply in breastfeeding people.

Cosmetic companies use placentas for their skin growth factors. And placental blood is rich in stem cells, which have a regenerative function.

The pituitary gland releases this hormone. It controls thyroid function.

Thyroxine acts as a catalyst in the body. It influences many body processes. These processes include oxygen use, growth/ development, metabolism, vitamin requirements, reproduction, and resistance to infection. Many women suffer from thyroid disorders postpartum. Doctors tend to misdiagnose these as normal postpartum fatigue.

“Vitamin B6 helps a lot of the systems in your body function,” says Dee Sandquist, MS, RD, CD, a spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. “It is important for cardiovascular, digestive, immune, muscular, and nervous system function. It is one of the vitamins that are behind the scenes.” Check out more about B6 here.
